7 YEARS YG BERBALOI-BIOGRAFI RINGKAS X-STUDENT2 AKU
Alhamdullillah ada good news to share.
Bila I look back, aku rasa alhamdullillah memang berbaloi hidup. Almost semua students yang work dengan aku end up (dan akan end up) dengan PhD dan jadi pensyarah dan BESTnya semua mengajar dan work on Finite Element dan engineering mechanics. My dream of building Malaysia Intellectual Empire and me becoming the Caesar semakin menjadi kenyataan, chewahhh. Biografi ringkas x-students dan current students aku sekarang as below:
A. DAH ADA PHD DAN SEKARANG PENSYARAH
1. Dr Razin – Dr Razin aku consider x-student terawal aku. Dia attended kelas steel design aku sebelum aku buat PhD. Dia akhirnya graduated with PhD from Imperial College dan sekarang ambik tempat aku teaching Finite Element di UTM.
2. Dr Ridza – Dr Ridza attended kelas master Advanced Structural Analysis aku then buat Dissertation master dengan aku on finite element formulation. Dr Ridza graduated with PhD from Oxford university in fluid mechanics and now teaching in UTM.
3. Dr Dzulkarnain Ahmad – Dr Dzul was a friend of mine waktu aku buat degree and master di UTM. Bila aku balik dari Imperial, Dr Dzul buat PhD di UTM bawah aku punya supervision untuk tajuk finite element and meshfree method. Now Dr Dzul is teaching in UNISEL.
6. Dr Yazmel - Dr Yazmel skrg pensyarah di UKM. Dia attended kelas master Advanced structural Analysis aku sezaman dengan Dr Ridza. He obtained his PhD from UKM.
B. PENSYARAH DAN SEDANG (ATAU AKAN) BUAT PHD
8. Aizat – Aizat pun sekarang di Imperial College tengah buat PhD on finite element for structural dynamics. Aizat attended kelas Structural Dynamic aku waktu buat master di UTM. Aizat adalah pensyarah UMP.
12. Wan Firdaus – Wan dulu attended kelas Teory of Structure aku then kelas Finite Element.
13. Firdaus Abdol – this FB post is about her initially.
14. Akhbar – Akhbar buat master dengan aku dan sekarang tengah buat PhD dengan aku on finite element modelling of FSI. Akhbar memang plan jadi pensyarah di UTP to be an expert in Finite Element and Computer programming.
17. Aik Ying Tang – Tang student PhD di Math Dept UTM under my supervision dan currently kitorang tengah work on blood flow with stenosis, of course in regards to finite element.
And all these basically achieved in 7 years after I got back from Imperial, 7 years di UTM yang berbaloi. And now I have a new mission that is, to manifold (multiple) whatever I achieved in UTM here in UTP; I want to double, triple, quad (if it’s a word) my effort here in UTP (those above at where they are operating) for the sake of MALAYSIA and the establishment of the nation intellectual empire (non-precedent). And I believe ME and all the name above will keep being together and working towards what we have agreed upon for so long…the best results will come when everybody do the best for themselves and for the group.
THE MOST FUNDAMENTAL OF QUESTION OF WHY
The most fundamental question of WHY that one can ask is
WHY MUST THE UNIVERSE SATISFY THE CONSERVATION LAWS, ALWAYS?
There is no question that the universe is running, in fact, came into existence due to the satisfaction of the conservation laws that mass, momentum and energy must conserve.
A herd of birds float in mid air because the laws are safisfied, hence the same goes to the "spinning" of heavenly bodies.
But the question remains, why is this?
WHY MUST THE UNIVERSE SATISFY THE CONSERVATION LAWS, ALWAYS?
The answer is, either there is a God wishing for it or we live in a universe where there is a single question of WHY, left unanswered.
My answer is obvious.
A TEACHER IS ONLY AS GOOD AS HIS OR HER BOOKS
A university teacher (pensyarah le tu) is only as good as his or her reading of books (number and type).
Lets ask, how many have we read and what type, mediocre topics or high level ones?
The great professors at great world institutions at their 50s and 60s didnt/dont become great overnight but accumulated their knowledge by reading throughout their younger years.
The idea that we are smart already just by having PhD is totally WRONG! PhD is nothing but a process that teaches us how to read and learn by ourselves. So if we stop reading and learning after getting our PhD that alone shows that we have gone through a WRONG PhD. Seriously, nothing much we knew from our PhD for it was just a PROCESS.
And when I say book, I really mean it literally, not journal articles or magazines because our journal reading (hence understanding), in turn, is as good as the books that we read. Look at the journal articles we read and ask what is the percentage of our understanding and are there other articles that we just put them aside simply because we just couldnt understand them?
Many believe that teachers become great by DEFAULT as they get older. Come on, without continuous reading there is no possibility for accumulation of knowledge. What? We think professors can get knowledge during their sleep through dreams? We must be dreaming then.
Ok I know there is a small group of us who are actually reading book all the time already but many still dont and many are deluded that we are smart enough because we have PhD. So those who are yet having their reading habit, please start now.
Why? Because we as teachers need to be very smart over time for then only we can produce really smart students hence society hence nation. Then only we, as a society and as a nation can produce and sell technologies to the outside world and bringing in money INTO our country.
Now our country is really in bad shape because of our total dependence on oil as there is all there is at time South Korea, Japan, China, UK, Germany, US are selling their technologies hence having their sustainable economy (at least more sustainable than depending on natural sources and service type of economy like us).
If we really love our people and country, we as scholars must be very smart so that we can start producing marketable technologies. But remember, for it to be marketable the technologies must be:
1. Cheaper but perform similar, at least
or
2. Same price but perform better
or
3. Cheaper but perform better - the best
But to achieve this, we must compete with the brains at MIT, PRINCETON, CALTECH, IMPERIAL COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE, OXFORD, TOKYO and the like. Are we ready and fit enough for this fight?
So teachers, lets keep reading books until we die. Indeed, we have a very good reason for it, have we not?
And if we have difficulties in our reading of a book, that means there are other books that we need to read and understand first, so go dig deeper and keep reading. For those in engineering fields, read back also our maths and physics books because, many times, these are the sources of our difficulty smile emoticon
LEARN FIRST THEN ONLY RESEARCH
Learning is an act of making effort to know something that is known to others already. When we say we learn something new, it means that "something" is new only to us and not to others. So since others knew it already we learn from them by asking them, by listening to their lectures, by reading their books as well as their papers and so on.
Researching, on the other hand, is about making some effort to know something that is yet to be known to anybody. To research means to venture into the unknown and if we succeed, we would then call our success discovery or breakthrough. When we say we have researched and discovered something new, it means that "something" is new to everybody, new to the whole human race. And, as opposed to learning, we are basically alone in our research; alone as a self or alone as a team.
But remember, we must learn first before we research.
Else, how do we know what others don't know?
Else, how can we have the capacity that others dont have (which lacking of it is what had cause them to fail in their effort in the first place)?
Failure in making the distinction between "learning" and "researching" what leads us astray in our scientific works and worst, is what keeps us in the state of denial.
Finally, remember also, be with our "teachers" first (not only our immediate teachers, but teachers as in the authors of the books of our fields for example, as for me they would be Timoshenko, Zienkiwich, Reddy, Bathe, Nethercot amongst others) before we step into the unknown.
REMEMBER, LEARN FIRST THEN RESEARCH.

AKU, DUCATI DAN ROKOK
It was two years ago, somewhere in 2012 when my younger brother, Je, started the idea of owning back a motorbike. The last time we had one, was more than 10 years before that when me and Je, each owned a Yamaha RXZ (it was 5 years for my other lil brother Deni, after he inherited Je's RXZ).
2012 was the time when ER6 and Versys were the talk of the town. Je even brought me to visit a shop in Kota Damansara to view ER6. At the time I thought ER6 was not bad and quite alluring. I still remember how he and Deni were very into ER6 but now, no longer, I believe.
My cousin, Abg Wan on the other hand, was very into the touring version, Versys. He talked us, the SAMETOK or the cousins (Me, Je, Deni, Abg Wan, Abg Tan, Abg Sham and Abg Nizam, into what we called "ngamboi" session (a day-out just us male cousins) to Ipoh so as to view Versys when it all happened, my first encounter with DUCATI MONSTER.
Whilst Versys, like Er6, was quite alluring, the MONSTER was REALLY something. It caught my eye like no other bike has. It was love at first sight, I would say. I never wanted a bike so bad until I saw this MONSTER.
After that "ngamboi" session, every time the topic of big-bikes popped up among us, I never failed to mention DUCATI MONSTER and how I really love it.
But, due to the high price and the absence of any practical reason, I kept my desire of having the DUCATI just to myself and life went on.

But it all changed about a month ago when I realized my smoking habit had gone to its worst level. I smoke more than a pack on a good day and about two packs on a bad day and the fact that I am approaching 40 (will be in 2 and half years) only makes it so alarming.
I MUST REDUCE IT whatever it takes, I said to myself. So I decided to reduce it to half (at least) and I also decided that I must have a very good motivation for it so as to ensure this effort to prevail. A DUCATI would be a very2 good one, wouldn't it?
When I told this to my wife, Lynn, about how I want to reduce my cigarette to half and how it would be "easier" if I can have the MONSTER as motivation (the argument would be that the money I'd save from cutting down my cigarette will be what paying for the bike), she just agreed. In fact, she urged me to get the bike ASAP so that I can execute my plan (cigarette reducing) immediately.
So this is how now, and it has been over a month alhamdullillah, I am no longer a heavy smoker according to WHO. The world body defines heavy smokers as those consume more than a pack a day,
And this is also how a Ducati Monster, the bike I have kept thinking since 2012, ends up as mine after finding some very good reasons for it; as a motivation (in cutting down smoking) and practically at no cost (if I keep paying the bike with the money saved from the cutting down of my cigarettes).
At no cost indeed, except for the 20k Lynn gave me for the upfront payment, ngeh3x...Love you Deng

MOTIVATIONAL TALK AT UTHM
Pic 1: in the morning before rolled out to UTHM with my new Ducati, hehe:)
Last Friday I was invited by FKAAS, UTHM to give a motivational talk to a group of undergraduate students who have some small difficulties in pursuing topics related to structural analysis.
The talk was one part of the two-days workshop where lecturers were divided to facilitate smaller groups of student according to subtopics.
What a great initiative taken by FKAAS, UTHM in ensuring continuous support to the learning of their students, THUMBS UP!!!
Pic : received token of appreciation from the Deputy Dean, PM DR Mohd Irwan Juki.
In regards to my talk, I started by showing some of my works and achievements obtained with my students (previous and current) here in UTM. The purpose of the demonstration was not to brag BUT to show proof that, if my students in UTM can do it, STUDENTS IN UTHM CAN TOO!!
I said to them, its not totally their fault to find structure's topics difficult as it is also got to do with PERSPECTIVE (the way to look at things).
So just by giving a little tweak to the PERSPECTIVE insyaAllah, THEY TOO CAN EXCEL IN STRUCTURAL RELATED SUBJECTS AND THEN ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS.
In the second part, I showed the six clips from the movie A Beautiful Mind (like I often do in class) and by looking at their responses; how their eyes were wide open with enthusiasm and excitement while watching the clips, I know, this group of students WILL BE SOMEBODY IN NO TIME, InsyaAllah and Ameen.
In the final part of my talk, after giving them the hope and the motivation they need, I then detailed to them some LEARNING TIPS which I and my students practice in our effort to understand our learning. I broke them into:
1. WHY (LEARN) ?
- I explained that, in everything we do, we must have good reasons of doing it for then only we can be persevere, consistent and enthusiastic. For me, the reasons can be subdivided into:
a. personal reasons
b. religious/universal reasons
2 HOW (TO LEARN) ?
- Learning is all about tracing the patterns and making conclusions and then projections (prediction, application) out of it.
- To trace the patterns, one must make comparison (hence the need to have two sources or more; two books, two journal papers, two notes etc) so as to identify SIMILARITIES and DIFFERENCES. Two topics must have similarities because knowledge is accumulative in nature but must also have differences else they can not be a topic on their own in the first place.
- To demonstrate this concept, as an example, I compared the analysis of two types of structure; bar and beam. For instance, I showed them how both structures could have constant parameters EA and EI hence the SIMILARITY, but then I shown how A and I were derived for bar and beam respectively, hence the DIFFERENCE.
- IT'S ALL ABOUT STORY TELLING BASICALLY.
3. WHEN (TO LEARN)?
- One of the good thing about the movie A Beautiful Mind is that, it tells how a true scholar must live his learning. Meaning, we must learn at all times. And if we passionate and enthusiastic about our learning, the process will no longer BURDENSOME and BORING but instead, IT BECOMES FUN AND EXCITING.
- We all should start to treat knowledge as fun, that is, something that we talk leisurely over a teh tarik at mamak, besides football, cars and girls
4. WHAT (TO LEARN)?
- This is straightforward where I elaborated that it should be both, THE SUBJECTS OF OUR COURSE, AND THE LIFE ITSELF.
- We must be a rounded person, THE BEST ENGINEER, THE BEST SON/DAUGHTER, THE BEST FATHER/MOTHER, THE BEST BROTHER/SISTER, THE BEST CITIZEN/MUSLIM etc. So to be the best, we must excel in our learning of subjects and life itself.
5. WHO (WITH WHOM WE LEARN)?
- 1. With friends. We need to discuss to scrutinize matters. Two heads usually better than one. Your friend might have caught something during the lecture and reading which you have missed and vice versa. So by putting everything on the table during your meeting at Kedai Mamak, everybody can benefit.
2. With ourselves (and all alone by ourselves). This is like the lyrics from Guns and Roses' November Rain,
"Everybody needs sometime on their own, everybody needs sometime all alone...".
There will be time when we just need to be alone, thinking alone of what we read and the work we are working on. This is usually the time when we suddenly SEE THINGS DIFFERENTLY and SHOUT
"AHAH!!! NOW I GOT IT! Alhamdullillah, owh thanks Allah for giving me this knowledge"
Wallahualam.
* I love it every time in UTHM. I like to feel needed I guess

TG HADI AWANG, DS WAN AZIZAH DAN RAJA BERPERLEMBAGAAN
Sesiapa yg dah tengok video ceramah Tuan Guru Haji Hadi harini akan tau yg beliau mmg dah berpatah arang berkerat rotan.
They can shout as much and as loud as they want, I just couldn't be bothered.
PERIOD.

So, macamana?
Sebab inilah berkali2 aku nyatakan:
"The measure of smartness of a society is the rate at which they come to an agreement".
wallahhu'alam

Having PhD students and research only means, EVERYDAY IS A NEW DAY.
Tambah pulak, ramai student2 aku yg awal dah jadi pensyarah, Dr Dzul (PhD, UTM), Dr Razin (PhD Imperial) and Dr Ridza (PhD Oxford), Dr Salasawati (PhD, UTM) so mestilah aku nak keep working dengan diorang yang muda ni yang memang tengah energetic nak start research which only means, I MUST KEEP INTELLECTUALLY FIT myself utk aku buat networking dgn diorang, else, MALU lah aku.
Selain itu, Hairil is coming back with PhD from Busan. Erwan is one year already in Imperial. Aizat is going to Imperial this Sept. And I am arranging, through UTM-CIAM, the sending of Tan and Firdaus to Oxford for their MPhil-PhD.
And today, I just received a notification to become the referee for Muhd Nor who is also applying to Imperial for PhD.
Oh yer, we all work in Computational Mechanics.
So diwaktu aku sedang menyaksikan pembinaan sebuah EMPAYAR INTELEKTUAL MALAYSIA yang akan MATURE insyaAllah, dalam 4,5 tahun lagi (bila semua nama diatas dapat PhD dan work together by networking), takkan lah aku nak peluk tubuh aja.
NO, I MUST KEEP BEING DYNAMIC.
So, ni la sebabnya aku cakap;
Pensyarah adalah kerjaya yang sangat dinamik.
*Tujuan aku tulis ni:
1. supaya nama di atas dan student2 aku yang lain tahu expectation nya being a university teacher. Lets work together towards the "EMPAYAR".
Ibn Al-Haytham kata;
The duty of the man who investigates the writings of scientists, if learning the truth is his goal, is to make himself an ENEMY of all that he reads, and,.. attack it from every side. He should also suspect himself as he performs his critical examination of it, so that he may avoid falling into either prejudice or leniency - Doubt Concerning Ptolemy
Terjemahan:
Untuk pengetahuan, sewaktu zaman sains Islam, scholars Islam berkonsepkan mempelajari tulisan2 ilmuwan Greek terdahulu (Ptolemy, Euclid, Aristotle etc) tetapi bersikap kritis atas mereka.
